Organized by Dar al-Kalima University College of Arts and Culture, the‘Art and Resistance’ Conference will be held in the Palestinian city of Bethlehem May 12-16, 2016.
The “Art and Resistance” Conference brings together a group of artists, scholars, art historians, art critics and activists from different parts of the world to examine the role of art and visual culture in the global struggle for social justice. The conference aims at providing a forum for critical examination of the gap between distant and abstract knowledge about war and colonialism and the reality on the ground. It also offers a platform for sharing ideas and artworks, interaction and dialogue between artists and scholars from Palestine and from around the world.
Having the Art and Resistance Conference in Bethlehem at this time is of great significance as Palestine is situated in the center of the global struggle for freedom, justice and peace. Examining the role of the arts in issues relating to colonialism, state-violence, and the continued erosion of civil liberties is associated with the effort to resist war and its brutality. We are addressing the intellectual‘s responsibility toward the world’s social and cultural concerns and the role of art and visual culture in these concerns.
